Commerce Square, Lisbon’s grandest plaza, was built on the site of a palace that collapsed in the earthquake of 1755. The widespread destruction prompted Portugal’s prime minister to redesign much of the city for modern times, with Commerce Square as the crown jewel facing the Tagus River.
